Live television that scales to millions

Freecast aggregates live TV, on-demand libraries and streaming channels into one experience. We rebuilt the delivery pipeline so playback stays smooth from a quiet Tuesday to a marquee live event with the whole audience arriving at once.

The pipeline

From source to screen

Four stages, each independently observable, so the real bottleneck surfaces in seconds - not during a live event.

01

Ingest

Source streams come in over RTMP and SRT, health-checked from the first frame.

02

Transcode

An elastic ladder produces the renditions viewers need, scaling with live demand.

03

Package

HLS and DASH packaging prepares content for adaptive delivery to any device.

04

Deliver

A multi-CDN edge serves most viewers without ever touching the origin.

The challenge

The crowd arrives all at once

Average load was comfortable; the spike at the start of a live event was not. Rebuffering climbed exactly when it mattered most, origin traffic surged, and delivery cost threatened to grow faster than the audience. The platform needed to be designed around the burst, not the average.

Our approach

We split the pipeline into ingest, transcode, package and deliver - each with its own metrics - so the real bottleneck surfaced in seconds instead of during a live event. Then we leaned on the three levers that do the heavy lifting: adaptive bitrate, aggressive edge caching, and elastic transcoding that scales with demand.

The outcome

Freecast now absorbs event-start surges without rebuffering climbing, serves most viewers straight from the edge, and tracks cost per delivered hour as a first-class metric. Playback is reliable across web, mobile and TV - and the team can see the quality viewers actually feel.

What keeps it smooth

01

Adaptive bitrate

Each viewer gets the quality their connection can carry, so playback stays smooth instead of stalling.

02

Multi-CDN edge delivery

Popular streams are served close to viewers, keeping the origin quiet even during a surge.

03

Elastic transcoding

Rendition generation scales up and down with demand rather than paying for peak capacity around the clock.

04

Low-latency live

Protocol chosen per use case - segment-based for broadcast, real-time where interaction genuinely needs it.

05

Quality-of-experience metrics

Startup time, rebuffering ratio and failures are measured as the viewer feels them, not just server health.

06

Cross-device playback

One consistent, reliable experience across web, mobile and the living-room TV.
